hi it’s alice here.
i realize reactivating this blog is gouache but my twitter doesn’t have a ton of followers and I wanted to get the word out on something
me and my girlfriend have been planning on moving for a couple years now and we think we’re gonna finally be able to do it this year thanks to some fortunate circumstances. however money for both of us is really tight; between my student debt and moving costs in general.
while I’m not asking for sight unseen donations, we both would appreciate it if you checked my patreon for my writing or her sideblog where she discusses exactly how the american government works.
if you DO want to donate to me directly w/o patreon because you are possibly nicest person ever, my paypal is rangerofpso@gmail.com.
thank you for your help :~)
rebloggin because I did some more patreon writing, thank u for all the help
I am pleased to announce that you can now support The Governmentalist on Patreon!
Do you ever wish that you had learned more about government in school?
Do you want to get involved in the political process, but don’t know the first thing about politics?
Do you wish there was someone you could ask things like “what is a Superdelegate?” or “how on earth do caucuses work?”
I’m here to help.
The Governmentalist is a weekly column where I answer your questions about government, civics, elections, and the American political process. I make an effort to examine current events not just from the modern perspective, but in their historical context. Here are just a few examples:
Your support will help me create content that is detailed, comprehensive, and most importantly, fun to read. I have a degree in Political Science from Colorado State University (go Rams!) and while I don’t know everything about government - who could! - I know enough to get started on just about any question you might have, and diligent research and strong written communication skills will get us the rest of the way!
Thank you so much for your consideration! Together, we can defog the political process - one question at a time.
Y’all, I’m completely bowled over by the amount of support that I’ve already received from this community. This project is an important and fun part of my life, and I hope that it’s helping you, too.
If you want to support this project, please consider supporting it on Patreon - but if you can’t, then helping me spread the word would be amazing, too. Thank you all so much!
this is my girlfriend and shes a) quite good and b) we’re trying to save up to live together so it’d be nice if you’re interested in this at all to pledge some money. honk honk
Sorry about that radio silence, everyone! As promised, I’ve been super busy preparing for Sakura Con, which is coming up in just two days! This weekend, I’ll have not one, not two, but three panels, all about women in anime. They are:
More than Strong Female Characters: Women-Driven Anime will be the first up on Friday at 2:00. Join me and Jared, editor of Heroine Problem, as we discuss what goes into making a great woman-driven show.
If you’re curious about some real-life women behind some excellent (and some terrible) shows, come see my panel about Female Anime Directors on Friday at 9:00 pm. I will be joined by my friend Michelle, who knows way more than I do!
Finally, I will be flying solo on Saturday at 2:15 as I discuss abusive relationships at You Only Hurt the One You Love: Mechanics of Abuse in Shoujo Manga. This was probably the hardest one to put together and definitely the most important of the group.
Come if you can, and make sure you come say hello while you’re at it. If you can’t, I’ll have audio/transcripts posted in not too long.
Today!!!!!!!!!?
go see one of my fav people
Minfilia is not my favorite character but man do I get pretty fed up with the commentary surrounding her. Reddit’s favorite “haha I can’t remember her name so I just call her ‘tits’“ is a big one, followed by the usual “I don’t know how to criticize the writing so I talk about wanting to graphically murder the character because I find her kinda boring” stuff.
See, Minfilia isn’t my favorite either, but I think she gets way too little respect for her role in the story, which is enormously important. Far too many players think of her just as That Lady Who Calls You A Bunch, completely ignoring and forgetting that Minfilia is the main reason why nearly everything in the main story comes together and why people have any tools to protect themselves against Ascians and Garlean invasions.
As it stands, she’s basically the one person that the Grand Company leaders listen to and respect universally, the only person who knows how to talk to three different nations and convince them to work together. We see that Alphinaud really can’t - the name of Louisoix commands some inherited respect, but when push comes to shove he doesn’t know how to deal with the individual nations in a way that could be considered respectful, and as a result he winds up with support only so long as his goals align with those of the leaders.
Not so with Minfilia. She knows how to ask for help from these people, and more importantly when to ask. All of her efforts are turned to coping with threats too big and far-reaching for the average Eorzean or even the national leaders to think about. Ascians are literally the most ancient malevolent force on the planet that anyone knows of, and Minfilia turns all of her contacts and resources into figuring out how to fight and destroy one of them, something that should be impossible.
And she does it.
There’s a reason why everyone in the story treats Minfilia with such reverence - because she’s a leader, one of the only people actually capable of leading without the weight of a nation or an army. The ending of 2.55′s storyline throws it into stark relief, because she even knows when her safety is a detriment to the safety of others. She’s as good a leader as anyone could hope to have. So if you want to make fun of her fashion sense, be aware that you’re making fun of a woman who has long since earned the right to dress however the hell she wants.
(And yeah, her outfit is a whole other issue by rights, but calling her ridiculous because of it involves missing the point so thoroughly that you may as well be in orbit.)
